Lift failed on building site father dies and son suffers serious injuries

A lift has failed at a Laing O’Rourke site in Liverpool, the Mersey Police confirmed that a 53 year old man has lost his life after the external lift malfunctioned and dropped.

A second man 18 understood to be his son was also in the lift and sustained injuries in the accident.

It is understood that an external site lift failed dropping the victims several floors at the Unity Street site where Laing O’Rourke is main contractor.

A Laing O’Rourke spokesperson said: “We can confirm there was an incident at the Unity Building yesterday afternoon in which two men were seriously injured. Tragically, one of the men died at the scene and the second is in a critical condition in hospital.

“Our Health and Safety team is at the site and we and our sub-contractors will cooperate fully with the investigation into what happened. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the men at this extremely difficult time.”
