A 23-year-old worker sustained a broken femur after falling four metres from a roof on Sherfield English Road while working for EE Renewables Limited on 16 December 2022 the firm was fined £120,000 while working on a property in Salisbury.
The incident occurred as the man was adjusting a solar panel. He slipped and fell to the ground, resulting in serious injuries. The company had been hired by the homeowner to reposition nine solar panels higher on the roof.
An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that EE Renewables Limited had failed to properly plan the work at height. The company did not implement adequate safety measures, including edge protection, to prevent falls during the project.
EE Renewables Limited, based in Fareham, Hampshire, pleaded guilty to breaching safety regulations. The company was fined £120,000 and ordered to pay £4,716 in costs following a hearing at Swindon Magistrates’ Court.
HSE inspector Sam Applebee commented on the case:
“EE Renewables Limited failed to plan this work in a way that ensured it could be carried out safely. The lack of edge protection left workers at risk of falling from the roof.
“Working at height continues to be one of the leading causes of injuries and fatalities in Britain. It is crucial that companies take appropriate measures to protect their workers and follow safe working practices.”
This case serves as a reminder to employers about the importance of proper planning and implementing safety measures to prevent falls and protect workers operating at height.
