£1bn Hs2 ‘super hub’ station gets go ahead

The Hs2 has been given the nod to start the first permanent construction works for the London Old Oak Common HS2 station, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has confirmed.
Balfour Beatty Vinci Systra joint venture will build the £1bn ‘super hub’ station at London Old Oak Common, which will support an estimated 2,300 jobs on the site at peak construction.
Work will now start with the construction of a 1.8km long huge underground diaphragm wall to form the station’s ‘underground box’, where six HS2 railway platforms will eventually sit.
The massive piling rigs will also be needed to install 160 reinforced concrete columns inside the wall to help form the underground box and support the super structure.
Project director Nigel Russell, of BBVS JV commented saying that: “With many more years of work ahead, we are proud to be delivering one of Britain’s largest, connected and sustainable railway stations while simultaneously stimulating the local economy.
“Through our work, we are providing numerous employment opportunities for local people, as well as offering 250 apprentices the opportunity to start their career on the UK’s most exciting engineering project.”

The project at HS2’s Old Oak Common station once completed will offer unrivalled connectivity from the 14 new platforms which include six new HS2 platforms, four conventional platforms which will be served by trains to Wales and the South West and 4 Crossrail platforms,
Phase one will create the 750,000m3 box, with work on the eight overground platforms will begin with over 1600 concrete piles to be installed into the ground that the super structure will sit on.
The stations lightweight roof structure will cover the area of three football pitches this has been designed toilet in natural light and minimize the use of materials to help reduces the carbon impact of the station in the future
