A new-build housing development in Darlington was left badly damaged after a JCB was reportedly driven into multiple unoccupied homes on Sunday evening.

The incident occurred at around 8:50pm on April 27 at a site on Hurworth Moor, just off Neasham Road, where a number of new properties were under construction as part of a social housing project.

Durham Constabulary confirmed that they received reports of a man driving a JCB into several homes. Upon arrival, officers found seven unoccupied houses had sustained significant damage, along with the JCB itself.

Cllr Matthew Roche, Darlington Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Housing, expressed disappointment over the incident:

“The Neasham Road site is part of our ambitious programme to build hundreds of much-needed social homes, and it’s disappointing, to say the least, that this has happened.
We are working closely with the police as they carry out their investigation and would encourage anyone with information to come forward.”

An investigation is ongoing, and anyone with relevant information is urged to contact Durham Police.
