Suffolk businessman Greg Nelson is hoping his own great business idea, National Tradesmen, is going to be one of the really successful ones.

UCS graduate Greg, from Ipswich, is a former carpenter who decided to return to education during the recession, in order to improve his skills set and his opportunities in the jobs market.

The world-wide web has some spectacular business successes – and many failures too.

For every Google, Facebook and Twitter there are hundreds of less successful internet ideas, and sites that don’t catch on.

Everybody wants to find that `Great Idea’ which really flies online.

He has built his new website for tradesmen and those looking for them.

Founder Greg, now 40, was previously a trained carpenter. and he worked in a variety of areas within the construction industry, from shopfitting to second fix on housing sites and renovation projects, including oak framing.

He decided to take a break and return to his second interest, computing.

He said: “I returned to education in 2010. I had an HNC in computing and I took it up to degree level, at UCS in Bury St Edmunds.

“I enrolled at UCS, Bury for an Applied Computing Course which covered all aspects of computing including networking, database design and web design.

“Initially I found the course to be a challenge. I soon began enjoying my new college life and started getting some good grades.

“I had this idea for my dissertation. I started writing the code and coming up with the ideas.

“From that I developed the basic site.

“I spent the next three years making it bigger, and better and building the Apps.”

Greg Nelson added: “As a tradesman I always struggled to find construction work in my local area so thought I would try to solve the problem by creating a website and app where tradesmen and companies can meet.

“Being a tradesmen I understood that if you were a tradesmen, you not only need to specify your trade, but the skills associated with that trade because not every carpenter does shuttering, and not every plumber is gas registered, that’s why we have put together a complete skills section for every construction job including what qualifications they hold and what CSCS card they have.”

“Workers can use Nationaltradesmen.co.uk to build a profile of skills and qualifications that be updated as the operative progresses through their career, employers who are registered can search for tradesmen who are registered with us for free and contact them for free”.

“We also offer to registered users free job postings for the first three jobs and thereafter it is only £5 a job”.

Nationaltradesmen.co.uk has also built apps to accompany the website these are available on Apples app store, Google play, Amazon Apps and the Windows store. Through our apps workers can search and apply for jobs in their area and employers can match workers with specialist skills and trades in specific areas.

Nationaltradesmen.co.uk also has also incorporated forums and blogs for those who are registered to post about tools, work or construction courses.

The site also has trade specific areas within the forum for all the different trades with instant messaging, member’s areas and a supplier’s directory for anyone involved in construction to upload their logo and link to their own website.
