The firm, established 40 years ago, installed more than 100,000 sq m of roofing and cladding each year, working on a mix of projects for main contractors like Bam, Carillion and Ocon.

Up to 50 staff and workers are understood to have been laid off after the firm ran into cash flow problems caused by payment delays with a main contractor.

It was part of the AWI group which also owned InnerHouse Surfacing, a leading surfacing and civil engineering company in the Midlands, which is also in administration.

A rival roofing firm told the Enquirer: “It’s a shame about Apex, we have managed to get some of their asphalters on with us but there will be other guys left without work.

“It’s a very sad situation.”

Apex had recently won a contract with David Wilson Mercia to roof around 80 new homes at the former Moor Green Football Club site in Birmingham.
